Thousands Attend Job FairMore than 4,000 New Yorkers trekked to Madison Square Garden yesterday in search of a better gig. “The number seemed much greater today than eight month’s ago,” said Sourabh Sen, an executive at financial planning firm First Investors, one of 45 employers participating in the job fair.
Last month the city’s jobless rate was 5.2%, down from 5.4% in April and 5.9% in May 2000, but still higher than the national unemployment rate of 4.4% in May. Sen collected more than 400 resumes for 10 entry-level positions and plans to call about 50 candidates for follow up interviews.
Sifting through resume, Sen said when he sifts through resumes, he always asks himself, “Would I be comfortable putting this person in front of a client worth $10 million?”
Dressed in a blue shirt and a yellow tie, attendee Jose Perez, 34, waited in line to speak with recruiters from insurance giant New York Life. Perez teaches English at a Bronx high school, but he said he was ready to make the change. “I’ve only seen two companies so far: Verizon and First Investors. “But both said they would give me a call,” he said with a smile.
“I’m anxious, not nervous,” said Aimie Idahor, 27, of Manhattan, who worked at a security firm before taking the time to raise three kids.
“I am impressed with the caliber of opportunities for higher-level candidates like myself,” stated Jon Ladov. “I have interviewed with at least 12 companies I would sign on with right now.” “I think people seeing you makes a big difference,” he said.
Sen agreed. “The best people we’ve hired come from job fairs.”
